Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said the only way Nigeria’s economy could be salvaged is to fight crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism to a standstill.
The governor stated this while he welcomed the Commandant to the Government House where the NSCDC Rivers State Commandant officially presented his letter of credence and intimated Fubara of his posting to the state.
Fubara charged the new Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Rivers State Command, Joachin Okafor to effectively carry out the corps mandate in the fight against economic sabotage especially in the Niger Delta region.
He said, “Our duty is to support you to carry out your statutory duties effectively; this is because it impacts us positively.
“Crude oil theft affects the economy because the quantity of oil production determines the 13 per cent oil derivation. I am happy with your achievements upon your assumption of duty; it shows you are serious and we will support you.
“Your primary assignment is to tackle the menace of illegal oil bunkering as we have also promised Mr President to map out all strategies in combating illegal dealings in petroleum products in Rivers State.”
The state Commandant, Okafor pledged to work with other sister security agencies and respective stakeholders to gather intelligence and information needed to fight all acts of economic sabotage.
