Last week, Paul Kagame of Rwanda was sworn in for his fourth term in office, thereby adding another five years to the 24 he has spent. By the time this new term is over in 2029, he will have officially governed Rwanda for 29 years without taking into consideration the unofficial six years he was in charge of Rwanda. As the former rebel commander of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, whose forces swept to power in 1994, Kagame was the vice president and minister of defence of Rwanda between 1994 and 2000. However, he was seen as the de facto president…
BOLA Tinubu is getting his priorities wrong on the economy and restructuring. In his reaction to the Patriots’ call to undertake constitutional reform, the President replied that his focus is first on the economy. After that, he might turn to political reengineering. That is unfortunate. It is the wrong order; this puts the cart before the horse. Unless the President reverses his focus, his Presidency is doomed. Political systems underpin economic success. Tinubu is making a mistake by reordering the system. Nigeria took a dangerously wrong turn with the January 1966 coup that overthrew the First Republic. Since then, a…

AT a time when Nigerians wallow in biting hunger and excruciating hardship, which recently snowballed into the deadly #EndBadGovernance and hunger protests, revelations have again emerged that the federal lawmakers revel in provocative opulence. For repeatedly urging Nigerians to endure while they live in contemptible luxury, the National Assembly members are hypocrites. The lawmakers are guilty as charged. Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo recently brought the lawmakers’ excessive remuneration back into national consciousness during a visit of a group of lawmakers campaigning for a single presidential term of six years. He castigated the lawmakers for brazenly fixing their salaries and allowances and…

Organised Labour has called on Nigerians to be patient with the Federal and State Governments following the delay in the implementation of the new minimum wage. This was even as the workers’ union absolved the Federal Government of any wrongdoing, saying it would be unfair to conclude that there was a deliberate attempt to avoid paying the new minimum wage. The Deputy President of Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Monday. President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage into law on July 29 after meeting with leaders of…
