The Abia State Government has emphasized the September 23, 2024, resumption date for the 2024/2025 academic session, warning that any schools in the state that resume before this date will face sanctions.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, issued this warning while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu expressed regret that some schools had resumed for the new academic session despite the government’s directive.
“Some schools resumed yesterday, contrary to the directive given by the Ministry of Education. As the government reforms the education sector, it is necessary to establish a robust regulatory environment to oversee the sector. Those principals who defied the directive and reopened schools yesterday may be sanctioned,” Kanu stated.
He also noted that the government was receiving feedback from the committee set up to recover schools from private individuals and organizations.
“The state government is calling on communities, traditional rulers, and youths to take ownership of all government properties within their communities. The government cannot spend billions of naira to put infrastructure in place for the comfort and convenience of the citizenry while unscrupulous individuals destroy these properties,” he added.
