The United Kingdom has nominated a renowned British-Nigerian lawyer, Professor Dapo Akande, for election as a judge at the International Court of Justice, Hague, The Netherlands, in 2026.
The UK National Group nominated Akande, according to a letter addressed to the Ambassador to the Netherlands, Joanna Roper published on the country’s website on September 6, 2024.
Defending the reason for the nomination of the Nigerian scholar, the UK said his rich legal expertise would benefit the United Nation’s apex court.
It added that the 56-year-old reflected the UK’s firm commitment to international justice, human rights, and the international rule of law.
Akande, an alumnus of the University of Oxford, London School of Economics, and Obafemi Awolowo University, was elected to the International Law Commission on November 12, 2021.
